Presenter: David J. Smith, teacher, consultant,
and author of the "Mapping The World By Heart" Curriculum

Audience: This workshop is for teachers who wish to incorporate more geography and world-minded materials and methods into their existing programs.

Workshop Focus: The focus is on geography education today, and on providing exposure and experience in a wide range of current ideas and practices.

Specific content includes the following (note that while all topics are touched on in all sessions, the longer sessions include lots more hands-on experience, group work, on-line time, etc.)

The national standards and how to apply them
The wide variety of materials available for geography and world-minded classroom practice
Incorporating more geography into your already full program
Review and enrichment strategies: games, quizzes, worlds fairs, small-group strategies
The "Mapping The World By Heart" Curriculum
Activities to enhance thematic studies and small- and large-group projects

In longer sessions, "Mining The Internet" activities are important components.
These may be focused specifically on geography or social studies, or may be more general:

Using the Internet and World Wide Web: on-line resources, maps, data, lessons, etc.
Using the Web for exercises in critical thinking and cooperative learning
Locating Web sites of value and interest for classes
Designing web-related lessons
Mastering navigation
Making the best use of search engines, indices, and portals
Organizing on-line resources for effective class use

Note: What is outlined here is intentionally broad in scope; if desired, focus of the entire program can be just Geography and World-Minded Classroom Practice, or just "Mining The Internet", or both.

About the presenter: David Smith has 26 years of experience teaching Geography, History, and English. In 1992, he received an "A+ For Breaking The Mold" Award from the U.S. Department of Education for his geography curriculum, "Mapping The World By Heart". Mr. Smith's work with students has been featured in Time, The New York Times, The Today Show, and The International Educator, and dozens of others newspapers and magazines. He has given lectures and workshops for educators all over the world on geography education and on Internet/Web issues and education. He is the author of several books.

Graduate Credit: UMUC PDP-International will offer one, two, or three semester hours of graduate credit through the University System of Maryland's Bowie State University. Details sent upon enrollment.
